Amarnath cave is a Hindu shrine located in jammu & kashmir, india. The cave is situated at an altitude of 3,888 m (12,756 ft), about 141 km (88 mi) from Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir and reached through Pahalgam town. The shrine forms an important part of Hinduism and is considered to be one of the holiest shrines in Hinduism. The cave is surrounded by snowy mountains. The cave itself is covered with snow most of the year except for a short period of time in summer when it is open for pilgrims. Hundreds of thousands of Hindu devotees make an annual pilgrimage to the Amarnath cave across challenging mountainous terrain.

The Amarnath temple is one of 18 Maha Shakti peethas, or "Grand Shakti peethes – highly revered temples throughout South Asia that commemorate the location of fallen body parts of the Hindu deity Sati.

The Jammu and Kashmir administration on Wednesday cancelled Amarnath Yatra 2020 due to ongoing coronavirus pandemic that has brought the country to a standstill, reported news agency ANI. 

The decision comes after the Lieutenant Governor Girish Chandra Murmu, Chairman of Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB), presided over a meeting at Raj Bhavan on Wednesday and observed that there are 77 red zones/ hotspots in Kashmir valley from where the yatra route passes.

The Amarnath Yatra was scheduled from June 23 to August 3.

Amid pandemic, the establishment of Langars, camp establishments, medical facility, snow clearance, among others are not possible, he said.

He further added that the government of India has extended the nationwide lockdown till May 3 and it is highly unpredictable to know which direction it will head. The safety of pilgrims is our prime importance, he stressed.

In view of COVID-19, the board unanimously decided that prevailing situation in the country is not right to oraganise Yatra 2020.

It was also decided by the SASB that Pratham and Sampann Pooja will be done with traditional fervour.

The board would be exploring the possibility of telecasting the puja and darshan of Shivling online and other media for millions of devotees in the country and its diaspora around the world.
